OUR APPROACH TO GOD
Prelude
Introit “Thou Wilt Keep Him in Perfect Peace”

Welcome!

Call to Worship: Psalm 19, adapted
The law of the Lord is perfect, revising the soul.
THE PRECEPTS OF THE LORD ARE RIGHT, REJOICING OUR HEARTS.
The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever.
IN KEEPING GOD'S WORD THERE IS GREAT REWARD.
Let us therefore bow down and worship the Maker,
GOD, OUR ROCK AND OUR REDEEMER!

*Hymn "A Mighty Fortress is our God" Martin Luther

Let us be before our God in silence.

Unison Prayer: John Calvin
MY GOD, FATHER AND PRESERVER, WHO IN YOUR GOODNESS HAS WATCHED OVER ME IN THIS PAST NIGHT AND BROUGHT ME TO THIS GREAT DAY, GRANT THAT I MAY SPEND THE DAY WHOLLY IN YOUR SERVICE. LET ME NOT THINK OR SAY OR DO A SINGLE THING THAT IS NOT IN OBEDIENCE TO YOUR WILL; BUT RATHER, LET ALL MY ACTIONS BE DIRECTED TO YOUR GLORY AND THE SALVATION OF OF MY BRETHREN. LET ME ATTEMPT NOTHING THAT IS NOT PLEASING TO YOU; BUT RATHER LET ME SEEK HAPPINESS ONLY IN YOUR GRACE AND GOODNESS.

OUR APPROACH TO GOD
Prelude
Introit

Welcome

CALLS TO WORSHIP

I: PSALM 117
Praise! Give glory to God!
ALL NATIONS, ALL PEOPLES, GIVE GLORY!
Strong the love embracing us.
FAITHFUL THE LORD FOREVER.
HALLELUJAH!

II: PSALM 113
Servants of God, praise, praise the name of the Lord.
BLESS THE LORD'S NAME NOW AND ALWAYS.
Praise the Lord's name: here and every place,
FROM EAST TO WEST, HALLELUJAH!

III: PSALM 98
Shout to the Lord, you earth,
BREAK INTO SONG, INTO PRAISE!
Sing praise to God with a harp, with a harp and the sound of music.
WITH THE SOUND OF TRUMPET AND HORN, SHOUT TO THE LORD!

IV: PSALM 145
I will exalt you, God my Lord, forever bless your name.
I WILL BLESS YOU EVERY DAY, FOREVER PRAISE YOUR NAME.
Great is the Lord,
HIGHLY TO BE PRAISED, GREAT BEYOND OUR REACH!

V: PSALM 33
Shout joy to the Lord, lovers of justice,
PRAISE GOD ON THE HARP, WITH TEN-STRING LYRE SING TO THE LORD.
For the word of the Lord is true:
THIS LOVER OF TRUTH AND JUSTICE FILLS THE EARTH WITH LOVE!

*Opening Hymn

We pause in silence before our God.

Unison Prayer I (Psalm 36)
Your mercy, Lord, spans the sky;
your faithfulness soars among the clouds.
Your integrity towers like a mountain;
your justice runs deeper than the sea.
Lord, you embrace all alike:
How we prize your tender mercy!
God, your people seek shelter,
safe in the warmth of your wings.
For you are the fount of life,
you give us light and we see.

Unison Prayer II (Psalm 5)
We pray to you, O Lord,
and our prayer rises with the sun.
Hear our words, our groans, our cries for help.
At dawn we plead our case and wait.
You never welcome evil, God,
you never let it stay.
But by your great mercy we enter your house
and bend low in awe within your holy temple.
In the face of our struggles, clear the way,
bring us your justice.

Unison Prayer III (Psalm 119: 105-108)
Your word, O Lord,
is a lamp for our steps,
a light for my path.
We have suffered so much,
give us the life you promise.
Receive, Lord,
all that we say
and teach us your wisdom.

Unison Prayer IV (Psalm 16)
Protect us, O God, we turn to you for help.
We once put faith in false gods,
the idols of our land.
Now we make no offering to them
nor invoke their names.
For you, Lord, you measure out our portion,
the shape of our future;
the joy of our inheritance.
So our hearts rejoice,
our bodies fill with the joy of life:
our whole being rests secure.
Do not abandon us to Sheol.
Show us the road to life:
boundless joy at your side forever!

Unison Prayer V (Psalm 51)
Have mercy, O God,
forget that we have defied you.
Wash away our sin,
cleanse us from our guilt.
We know our sins well,
they stare us in the face.
You see us for what we are,
sinners before our birth.
You love those centered in truth;
teach us your hidden wisdom.
Reshape our hearts;
steady our spirits.
Save us, bring back our joy.
Support us,
strengthen our will.
Help stop our tears,
and we will sing your goodness.
Give us words
and we will shout your praise!

Kyrie (sung)
LORD, HAVE MERCY ON US.
CHRIST, HAVE MERCY ON US.
LORD, HAVE MERCY ON US.

A Word of Assurance

A Responsive Reading of the Law

I am your God; you shall have no gods before me.
MAY YOU BE THE CENTER OF OUR LIVES.
You shall not make for yourself any graven image...
You shall not bow down to them or serve them.
MAY OUR UNDERSTANDING OF YOU BE BROADER THAN ANY DOCTRINE WE ARE TAUGHT.
You shall not take the name of your God in vain.
MAY WE CALL UPON YOU WITH ABSOLUTE TRUST.
Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
MAY WE PAUSE THIS DAY, STOP WORK AND ENJOY LIFE IN PRAISE OF YOUR CREATION.
Honor your father and mother.
MAY WE CARE FOR THEM AS THEY GROW OLD.
You shall not murder.
MAY WE BE REVERENT TOWARD ALL LIFE.
You shall not commit adultery.
MAY WE BE FAITHFUL IN OUR VOWS.
You shall not steal.
MAY WE GUARD THE RIGHTS OF OTHERS.
You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
MAY WE BE TRUTHFUL IN WORD AND DEED.
You shall not covet anything that is your neighbor's.
MAY WE BE SATISFIED WITH WHAT WE HAVE AND SHARE WHAT WE HAVE WITH OTHERS.

The Gift of God's Summer
Praise God for the gift of summer
The strength and warmth of the wind;
For the breadth of the sky above us
For the peace that the heart finds within.

Praise God for cool streams and clean water
That refreshes and renews each child;
For forests deep, through which we trod
And the coming home of mercy mild.

Praise God for fields of wildflowers,
The deer at dusk, the bee's busy day
For the mountains, the rivers, the sea and the sand,
God's path for serenity's way.

Praise God for back porch barbeques,
The dribble of melon upon our face,
For the shade of the tree, for family and friends,
For the Spirit we find everyplace.

And as the heat turns into cool evening,
And as the summer sun fades into the fall,
Prepare to give thanks to God for the harvest
With the promise of plenty for all.
