BROOKLYN - Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts of Troop 20 helped members of the New Utrecht Reformed Church, in Bensonhurst, celebrate the 90th birthday of a longtime church member and community leader in Brooklyn, Rose Giannini Lood. Later, at the Bay Ridge Manor, Mrs. Lood was honored at a large party of friends and invited guests where she received proclamations from the New York State Senate and Assembly and the New York City Council. She also received a $21,000 check from the historic organization, Friends of Historic New Utrecht, to be used toward restoration of the New Utrecht sanctuary, which dates to 1828. The church itself (within the mainline Reformed Church in America, RCA) was established in 1677. While the extensive $2 million restoration is under way, worship is conducted in the nearby Parish House within the historic complex at 18th Ave. and 84th St. The Scout troop is the country's oldest.
