At the 11 AM service on Sunday, June 14, three Men of Valor, Sons of Micah were honored at the New Utrecht Reformed Church Parish House: Assemblyman Peter J. Abbate, Vincent La Marca, webmaster of New Utrecht Reformed Church and assistant secretary of Friends of Historic New Utrecht, and Thomas Neve, executive director of Reaching Out Community Services. The three men also received citations from Councilman Vincent Gentile.

BROOKLYN - The New Utrecht Reformed Church opens its Parish House Saturday, April 25, for a thrift sale with proceeds to benefit restoration of the historic church complex. Hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Parking is available in the church lot at 18th Ave. between 83rd and 84th Streets.

"We'll have great prices on a wide range of items," says Rose Giannini Lood, a church leader who remembers her mother would put things aside for the sale when Rose was just a child. "This time," says Mrs. Lood, a church member for more than 70 years, "we'll have many new and gently used articles of clothing, along with beautiful linens and shoes, with books, toys, electronics, compact discs, handbags, jewelry and housewares."

Refreshments and a light lunch will be available to purchase.

The New Utrecht church was founded in 1677. Next to the Parish House, the sanctuary, built in 1828, is undergoing a $2 million repair and restoration. A famous "Liberty Pole," the last of its kind, stands on the church's front lawn. Subway and bus lines are nearby.

A Thrift Sale featuring both new and gently used dishes, glassware, kitchenware, electronics, pictures and frames, books, wearing apparel, shoes, handbags, linens, toys, games, and costume jewelry, will take place at the New Utrecht Reformed Church Parish House on Saturday, Apr. 25 from 10 AM to 3 PM. A lunch room offering hot and cold sandwiches, coffee, tea and soft drinks for purchase will be made available for this event. Proceeds from the Thrift Sale benefit the New Utrecht Reformed Church Restoration Fund to help repair our historic Sanctuary. Staten Island Jazz Band to Give Free Concert in Brooklyn

BROOKLYN - To welcome the first full day of spring, Friends of Historic New Utrecht will present a free, public concert by the Susan B. Wagner High School Jazz Band in the Parish House of the New Utrecht Reformed Church, 18th Ave. and 84th St., in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. The concert will take place on Saturday, March 21, at 7:30 p.m.

The Staten Island-based jazz band will be conducted by Mr. Paul Corn, assistant principal for the arts at Wagner, and adjunct professor at the Brooklyn College Conservatory of Music. The performance will mark the first appearance by the Wagner group in the Friends of Historic New Utrecht's popular concert series. Mr. Corn has appeared at New Utrecht before, most recently last April as conductor of the Jazz Band Ensemble of the Brooklyn College Conservatory.

The Parish House, known for its acoustics, is used for concerts and other programs while the church's historic sanctuary, next door, undergoes a $2 million restoration and repair. The sanctuary building dates from 1828. The New Utrecht church was founded in 1677. The pastor is the Rev. Terry Troia, who also is executive director of Project Hospitality on Staten Island.

Throughout the year the Friends historic organization presents cultural and educational activities, many attended by teachers and students from New York City schools.

The concert series is supported, in part, by public funds from the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, NYC Department of Youth and Community Development and the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
