Christmas Decorations Among Items at Brooklyn Thrift Sale

BROOKLYN - Christmas decorations are among the items featured as the New Utrecht Reformed Church opens its Parish House Saturday, October 24, for a thrift sale with proceeds to benefit the historic church complex in Bensonhurst. Hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Parking is available in the church lot off 18th Ave. between 83rd and 84th Streets.

"This fall we have some beautiful Christmas decorations that have been donated," Rose Lood, a church leader, says. "And all the proceeds will benefit this historic site." The church building, which is undergoing a $2 million repair and restoration, dates back to 1828. The New Utrecht Church was founded in 1677.

Mrs. Lood, who remembers when her mother would set aside items for the church thrift sales more than 75 years ago, says besides Christmas decorations "gently used" clothing, linens and handbags will be offered for sale, along with toys, books, housewares and jewelry.

Refreshments and a light lunch will be available to purchase.

A famous "Liberty Pole," the last of its kind in the nation, stands on the church's front lawn. The original New Utrecht cemetery, maintained to this day by the church, is a few blocks away. Street renamed after Friends leader

The corner of 83rd St. and 18th Ave. was renamed Robert M. Buonvino Place at a ceremony on the morning of Saturday, Sept. 26. Relatives of the late Troop 20 Scoutmaster and Friends of Historic New Utrecht President unveiled the street sign. Politicians and community leaders remembered the historian, who died Mar. 19, as one who supported the restoration of the historic New Utrecht Reformed Church, the preservation of the Liberty Pole and the living history of New Utrecht. A Thrift Sale featuring great prices and a large selection of clothing, linens, shoes, books, toys, handbags, jewelry and housewares will take place at the New Utrecht Reformed Church Parish House on Saturday, Oct. 24 from 10 AM to 3 PM. At the 11 AM service on Sunday, June 14, three Men of Valor, Sons of Micah were honored at the New Utrecht Reformed Church Parish House: Assemblyman Peter J. Abbate, Vincent La Marca, webmaster of New Utrecht Reformed Church and assistant secretary of Friends of Historic New Utrecht, and Thomas Neve, executive director of Reaching Out Community Services. The three men also received citations from Councilman Vincent Gentile.
